![]() ![]() ![]() Or you can also measure the number of grains through the Volume Measure Density (VMD) formula-įor the formula, you need to know exactly how many grains there are in a gram. Now you might wonder why? Here’s an easy explanation-ġ pound of powder is equal to 453.592 grams. It doesn’t matter whether your powder is heavy or light, or of a different type, the weight will be the same which is 1 pound equal to 7000 grains. Any powder of 1 pound would contain the same number of grains as it’s the basic rule of thumb. The Measurement of Grains: Know The Unitsġ pound of gunpowder contains 7000 grains whether it’s black powder or a smokeless one. If you want to know how many grains are there in an ounce of powder? To give you an idea, 437.5 grains make up 1 ounce of powder. ![]() As a result, the entire weight of a bullet represents the number of grains written in the body of the bullet. Hence, their weight is almost negligible. Usually used to measure the weight of bullets in a weapon. Conclusion Bullet Grains- The FundamentalsĪ grain is basically a unit for measuring mass. Why Do We Have To Choose The Right Bullet Grains?.How Many Bullets Can Be Loaded With 1 Pound Powder?.The Measurement of Grains: Know The Units. Thanks for putting up with the long post. Target results were about the same for both primers. They resulted in slightly faster and more consistant loads over the chrony. To my surprise, the WLR seemed to be a hotter primer. On a side note: I tried using some WLR primers in the place of CCI-250 primers in some of my 308 loads. I'm going to play with some more loads, but I see an eight-pound can of Benchmark coming home in the near future. Benchmark accuracy is fine and probably exceeds the capability of my hunter/sporter rifles. All my loads were about one grain under max as per the 2006 Hodgdon manual. Where I often lost velocity when I switched from W748 to Varget when I use Benchmark, I equal or exceed W748 velocities. I shot many Benchmark 223 and 308 rounds in the rifles listed in my first post. I have never seen my AR come home so clean after shooting 150 rounds. Benchmark meters GREAT in my Lyman 1200 and my RCBS uniflow power measures.īenchmark is far cleaner than W748 and a little cleaner than Varget. It is as available and about the same price as Varget in the stores around here ($19.00 - $24.00).īenchmark looks just like Varget, but it's only about 1/4 the size of Varget. I bought three pounds of Benchmark and have shot nearly two pounds of it. I too have had difficult extractions using W748 at the range. Iowegan: You make a good point about temps and pressures rising do to rapid firing. Unfortunetaly, it only goes up to 100 degrees but does give a good indication about the effects of temperature changes. If you have the Speer #13 manual, look at page 719. My book load of 26.5gr of Varget under a 55 gr Nosler BT is awesomely accurate. Next trip I used Varget and had no signs of over pressure. My favorite W-748 load is a tack driver but after 3 rounds fired in a few minutes, the cases were getting hard to extract. I learned this lesson while shooting prairie dogs. This makes the powder burn faster in all cases, but not as dramatic with Varget or other "extreme rated" powders. The brass case conducts heat very well and transfers the heat to the powder. No matter what the outside temperature is, three rapid fire rounds will heat up the chamber to over 150 degrees. This will add to the temperature swing, especially in an AR where rapid fire is normal. Your chamber will heat up after a few rounds have been fired. Hey guys, It's not just the outside temperature you should be concerned about. ![]()
